About Enfield

Located in Hartford County, the city of Enfield, Connecticut, was named after the town of Enfield in England. It was originally settled in 1679 by settlers from Salem, Massachusetts.

Enfield has a rich religious history. In 1793, members of the Shakers established the Enfield Shaker Village. The village was one of only 19 scattered from Maine to Kentucky. The Shakers were known for their celibate, communal living and simple architecture and furniture.

Preacher Jonathan Edwards preached his famous sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” in Enfield in 1741. The sermon featured vivid imagery of Hell, observations of the world, and citations of the scripture. The sermon is still studied today by Christians and historians and a stone monument stands in Enfield commemorating the location where this sermon was preached.

From 1830 to 1910, Enfield was the site of a gunpowder manufacturing company started by Augustus George Hazard. The city also had a booming carpet industry which attracted and employed many immigrants from Sweden.

Today, Enfield is home to the U.S. headquarters for the popular Danish building toy manufacturer LEGO. Other notable and large employers include Mass Mutual Financial Group and 3M.

Visitors to Enfield can enjoy visiting the Enfield Historical District which features many historic homes of various architectural styles dating back to the mid-18th century, a historic church, local shops and parks.
